But you can! ....
Lots of people think you can’t begin a sentence with “but.” But yes, you can. It’s also possible to begin a sentence with the word “and.” This may not be true for pesky college papers or, alas, your Ph.D. dissertation, but it’s true when it comes to plain old English. Even the grand old masters of grammar, none other than William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White, begin their sentences with “but” occasionally in their classic text The Elements of Style. So if they can do it, so can we.
