Nothing like a burger ...

This past weekend, I finally ate where the President of the United States dines: Ray’s Hell Burgers in Arlington, Virginia, right outside Washington, D.C. Let me tell you, the news reports are true, it’s a hell of a place – great burgers, seating outside and, on a late Saturday afternoon, a friendly beagle on the alert for some freshly ground meat and lots and lots of people.
I highly recommend the place. It’s not the best burger in this country (this will be revealed at a later date), but it’s pretty good one – incredibly juicy and you can have it your way. As I wasn’t looking for votes, I didn’t have to stick with the President’s plain cheddar-cheese choice with spicy mustard but could go for the sophisticated option: the B.I.G. Poppa. That’s a burger au poivre (lots and lots of cracked black pepper) with Danish blue cheese, cognac and sherry-sautéed mushrooms and grilled onions. Definitely order Ray’s heck sauce on the side. It’s a horseradish kick.
Others at our table got the Big Punisher, a burger hotter than h-e-l-l, and the Soul Burger Number One, a jazzy American number. The homemade coleslaw was good as were the sweet-potato fries, but the skin-on French fries were even better. Go hungry or split your burger with your sweetie, which is what I did!
